Adolescent Hookah Pipe Use: Exploring the Role of Basic Psychological Needs and Motivation

Background: Adolescent hookah pipe use is on the rise despite it being a public health concern. Several studies focus external determinants of adolescent but research focusing internal factors motivating adolescents to smoke sparse. Objective: Drawing self-determination theory, contemporary theory human motivation, this study aimed explore basic psychological needs (BPN) and motivation users nonusers in an attempt whether satisfaction or frustration contributes use. Method: Thirty adolescents, aged 13 19 years, participated qualitative using one-on-one semistructured interviews. Each interview was audio recorded, transcribed, thematically analysed. Results: This revealed that BPN, particularly competence relatedness influences adolescents’ decision not pipe. Hookah experience more compared nonusers. Furthermore, are extrinsically motivated smoke, whereas intrinsically smoke. Conclusion: The associated with relatively new perspective.
